Rocksteady afficiondo's will delight in a powerhouse of memories on the new Heartbeat release entitled "By Special Request". The undeniable influence of American 60's r&b which gravitated to Jamaica from Miami and New Orleans is reflected in delectable, precise, harmonies combined with well established unique Jamaican riddems making this one of the best collections released in years. Expertly showcased are some of Jamaica's best rocksteady singers including the Techniques, John Holt, Dennis Alcapone, The Melodians, U-Roy, Tommy McCook and the Supersonics, Phyllis Dillon, Justin Hinds, The Ethiopians, (plus more) with some rare chestnuts and a few previously unreleased tunes.

Winston Wright's, organ solo in the upbeat and ska rendition of "Cool Down" along with Tommy McCook's featured saxophone solo on "Real Cool" demonstrates the beautiful and melodic instrumental tastes reflective of the big band sound of the era. Perhaps my favorite song, is as timely today as it was when it was recorded, U-Roy and the Jamaicans sing "the leaders of the world, fighting for power, every hour, on the hour. The people of the world are looking for love, peace, and love. Don't want to study war not more." Most songs were recorded at Duke Reid's legendary Treasure Isle studio. A bountiful collection, this walk down memory lane will warm up my mornings for many days to come.
