 COSMO
b. Cosmo Fraser 1951 Westmoreland, Jamaica
COSMO was born and raised in the parish of Westmoreland, a stone’s throw from the famous Negril Beach in Jamaica. COSMO attended St. Elizabeth Technical High School where he was extremely active in many sports (soccer, track and field, volleyball, table tennis and some cricket). Singing, however, was always an integral part of his life. As a child, he won a number of singing competitions throughout the island. After graduating from high school, COSMO placed his singing career on hold to pursue his academic goals.
At age 19, COSMO came to the United States to live in New York, where he attended Columbia University, majoring in electrical engineering and computer science with a minor in premedical sciences. He was one of only two blacks in the graduating class. While at Columbia, he won a number of amateur singing competitions in NYC. One such competition was at the famed Peppermint Lounge, where Chubby Checker invented the Twist.
COSMO then attended the State University of New York Medical School at Downstate and did his internship and residence at Kings County Hospital. Upon completion of his residency, he was accepted to do a nephrology fellowship at the prestigious University of California Medical School in San Francisco. COSMO, presently a Professor of Medicine at UCSF and Chief of Geriatric Nephrology at the VA Medical Center in San Francisco, is a world expert in the field of nephrology. He has written extensively in the most prestigious medical journals, and has lectured throughout the world.
COSMO’s achievements have been recognized in Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, Who’s Who in Medicine, and Who’s Who in America. He is a member of American Association for the Advancement of Science, The New York Academy of Science, the Society of Neuroscience, The International Society of Nephrology, and the American Society of Nephrology among others.
Returning to his roots, COSMO went back to singing four years ago in a group which also featured a surgeon as the drummer and an OB/GYN as the keyboardist. They released a CD entitled Reggae Music Man to rave reviews. Based on their vibrant and enthusiastic performances, they gained a reputation as a great opening band in the San Francisco Bay Area. They have opened for Toots and The Maytals, Burning Spear, and Lucky Dube, to name a few. COSMO also performed at the famous Fillmore and at SLIMS to sold out audiences in San Francisco.
In this extraordinary effort, COSMO has teamed up with some of the best musicians to ever play reggae music. With George ‘Fully’ Fullwood on bass, Santa Davis on drums, Tony Chin on guitar, and Jawge Hughes on keys, and an incredible horn section, COSMO has produced a truly outstanding reggae CD. The message is peace, harmony, and justice. The sound can best be described as contemporary classical roots reggae. The musicianship and arrangements were done to augment COSMO’s soulful, melodic voice that rings clearly about love, honesty, social justice, and the island of his youth. There are many dimensions to COSMO. He has no trouble connecting music, medicine and engineering. He feels they are all part of the creative process of life which satisfy different aspects of his soul.

The CD "FIRE THIS TIME" was inspired by the many fans of roots reggae & ska music.
After seeing the responses to our performances from children, teenagers, parents and grandparents, we were inspired to record FIRE THIS TIME for the thousands of ROOTS REGGAE and SKA fans we have met. We would particularly like to thank the young children who spontaneously run to the stage, and never stop dancing (COSMO DANCERS) and the grandparents who watch attentively from the audience and write wonderful comments in our guestbook. We would also like to thank the SOUL SYNDICATE BAND for everlasting rhythms. Most of all, we want to thank the creator for divine inspiration.
